[COLLECTIONS] United Space Party

How to decipher the Alien names

The story behind the United Space Party collection, from a post by Joan Leib.

Collection named by Glenda Phillips.

Harriett from Nishiinoue = the one with big hair (harriet/hair)
Perpndk from Aarhus = his neck is perpendicular (perpndk) to his body
Toophliss from Ioannpravednyj = toothless; he only has one tooth
Drupe from Wurm = eyelids are droopy
B’gize from Radebeul = try saying it; sounds like “big eyes”
Nozee from Nizami = “nosey,” has a big nose
Kranial from Zafar = “cranial,” has a big head
Tite from Wu = little plaid outfit is a bit snug
Clnk from Sartre = pretty obvious (a robot goes clink or clunk)
Ocholego from Sarapul = ocho means eight in Spanish, so ocho lego is Spanglish for eight legs

[HELP] Foils explained

What is a foil?

A foil is a normal card in Packrat, with a special border containing a representation of the family the card’s collection belongs to. There is a separate section in your vault so you can see which foils you have collected.

Foils from each Family

You can see what foil cards look like on the Packrat Tools Mockup generator.

Why would I want a foil?

These cards are highly valued and by collecting and vaulting one foil from each family you can earn a Feat of Wonder.

Foil Feat of Wonder

Some users set themselves goals of collecting one foil from each collection, or all foils from an entire collection - these, although they are feats in themselves, do not earn you a Feat of Wonder and are purely personal.

How do I make a foil?

A foil cannot be purposely made. There is a small chance each time a card is created that the card will be a foil. Often players will create the same card over and over again to try and get a foil card.

Foils can be created by:

  • drawing a bonus card
  • buying a card from a Market (you can see the market that a card can be found in on the Packrat Market Tracker site)
  • combining three cards to make recipe - a.k.a making a card (you can see all the recipes for collections on the Packrat Card Info & Recipes site)
  • stealing a card from a non-playing pack (a person who has not added the Packrat application - from the “Other Friends” dropdown on the Steal tab)
  • and now cards are seeded into the rats, one of these seeded cards may foil

Are there any other ways of getting a foil?

You can steal or trade for a foil that another player has created (on the Foil Trading Board), but aside from a few special cases foil creation is random.

Special cases?

The 100th Packrat set (Packrat 100 - Artist’s Choice) was a special case where the first 250 of each card in the set automatically foiled after all the 250 had been purchased.

Are there any exceptions?

The Easter Basket set (released in Easter 2009) was part of a special Easter event where you could collect Easter eggs that were found by flipping cards in other player’s pack. These eggs were then used to purchase Easter Basket cards after the event ended. These egg-purchased cards had special borders of Easter eggs, similar to foils; but they are not foils and do not count towards your foil Feat of Wonder.

[COLLECTIONS] Devs Devs Devs!

The history behind the Devs Devs Devs! collection

This set was used to introduce Gowalla (iPhone app) in Feb 2009 - the top card being the Gowallamobile.

The following information was taken from the About page on the old Alamofire website (before it changed to Gowalla) - personal profiles written by Josh Williams.

Josh WilliamsFashion Consultant

is Josh Williams

“In a previous life I started a design company called Firewheel. Like this company it was also named after a wildflower. I keep a shortlist of flower names in my desk should this venture tank. Kidding! I mean, I’m kidding about the tanking part. I do keep a list of flower names though. When I was a kid I drew game ideas on my english papers. I hated english. Now I’m up late writing bios for a game company. The irony.”

Scott RaymondDirector of Weapons

is Scott Raymond

“I met Scott randomly several years ago on the interwebs. Scott has a tattoo with Roman letters on his wrist. I’ve always wanted a tattoo, but don’t have the arms for it. For this reason I think Scott is cool. Scott also likes to code. Back in the days of Web 1.8 we built an invoicing application for small businesses. Invoices are not quite as fun as games. If it weren’t for Scott, I’d probably still be doing web design work for questionable clients.”

Brian BaileyGlue Guy

is Brian Bailey

“By now you’ve noticed that we have several folks who work here named Brian or John. This issue is compounded by the fact that Bailey’s full name is John Brian. I’m not making this up. You can’t imagine how hard payroll is around here. Bailey keeps us organized, on track and in communication with each other. He is also at least three times more mature than the other Brian listed above.”

John CritzNerf Champ

is John Critz

“Critz and I have been friends since we were in our formative teenage years. Back then he had a penchant for fireworks — or anything that would blow up for that matter. Yes, this is Fort Worth. There is only so much you can do around here. Fortunately he straightened his life out and became a programmer where he now does his best to keep the pyro away from the servers.”

John MarstallJuan Valdez

is John Marstall

“John and I met years ago through a shared love… of iconography. John is a master at wrangling Adobe’s overpriced illustration bloatware, and his artistic talents are mission critical for wooing the highly targeted female gaming demographic. We’d be sunk without his drawings of cute animals with oversized eyes. Next time you find yourself at midnight clicking around trying to find Brianna, the magical purple pony, you can blame him.”

ZoSandi Weldonokeeper

is Sandi Weldon

“One of the few, true native Texans in the house, Sandi currently aspires to be a better Halo 3 player. When she’s not being gunned down by the rest of the studio, Sandi goes above and beyond the call of duty as our social community party planner. She’s also a cutthroat PackRat player, so I wouldn’t friend her on Facebook if I were you.”

Keegan JonesRock Star

is Keegan Jones

“Keegan is more internet famous than Justin Timberlake. In fact I should move his bio up to the top because his presence here will instantly drive more traffic to the company than ten large spent on Google Adsense. Keegan’s design brilliance earned him a cease and desist from MySpace once because they couldn’t cope with how cool he is. MySpace is lame.”

Adam McManusChainsaw Specialist

is Adam McManus

“Prior to his mission critical work on our systems infrastructure, Adam invested his brain power in top-secret missile defense projects. We told him if he could keep his security clearance badge that he would be an instant company hire. Sadly, our government nixed that idea. We hired him anyhow. You think I’m joking.”

Brian BrasherMaster of Raster

is Brian Brasher

“Brian (or Etherbrian, if you’re hip) illustrates pretty digital masterpieces for our games. I’ve been a fan of Brian’s work for like ten years now. This makes me kinda old, but makes him even older. Etherbrian has probably had more design submissions to Threadless turned down than anyone else ever. I believe it’s because the emo kids who hang out there don’t understand his brilliance. Soon Brian’s subversive quest to infiltrate the web will be complete and he will have his revenge on teenagekind.”

[RECIPES] Updated Lock Recipes

The Devs have recently added some new lock recipes, and removed some of the retired ones.  The locks have also gone up in price to 100Cr in the markets, and are appearing less regularly at this time.  You can track them in the Markets on the Packrat Market Tracker Locks page.

ETA: All the Lock Recipes (new and old) can be found on the Packrat Tools Locks Info page.

If you have any new information, let us know.

[HISTORY] The History of Packrat

Contributed by: Casey D’Andrea (on the Packrat Discussion Boards)

I thought we could take a step back and see where it all began. I’ve collected the early rumblings from IconBuffet and thought I’d share; hopefully this will provide a little insight into the early days..

I think it all started with some teasing posts on the forum — a la super TOP SECRET updates!

The posts on the Blog Forum

The actual PackRat icon set (a.k.a. Delivery)

It included some preliminary artwork that would later make it into actual PackRat collections. It also included the beta code. http://www.iconbuffet.com/freedelivery/packages/packrat

The official email blast to IB VIP members

This is what we were sent January 17, 2008:

Hello IconBuffet VIPeoples —

Today is that day that many of you have been waiting for. Yes, yes… the day we offer up our new game, PackRat, for your icon collecting pleasure. As you may have heard, PackRat (for now) is published exclusively as a Facebook application, so you’ll need to have a Facebook account to install PackRat.

We’re giving our IconBuffet VIPs a jump on the game. Along with our families and a few of our personal friends, you’re getting the first look at PackRat. You’ll have the opportunity to collect stuff before anyone else does, and a chance to amass your icons before we announce the game to the general public.

There are a few things you should be aware of: First, even though we’re not calling this a “beta” period there are still a handful of quirks and issues we’re ironing out with the game. If you have questions or a bug to report, we ask that you do so on the PackRat discussion board at Facebook:

We kindly ask that you please DO NOT post PackRat related support or bug issues to the IconBuffet blogs. We will simply refer you to the PackRat discussion board and delete your blog post. The PackRat discussion boards are also a great place to meet new friends, swap PackRat recipes, and contemplate game strategies. We highly encourage you to hang out there a bit.

Also, we’ve chosen to build PackRat on top of existing social networks like Facebook in order to open the game up to a broader group of people. As such, you’re likely to be interacting with a much larger community than that of IconBuffet. If you’re unfamiliar with Facebook, we encourage you to educate yourself about the ins, outs, ups and downs of networks like Facebook. Social networks like Facebook provide a great platform for a game like PackRat, however they’re not perfect havens. Just because you play a game like ours with someone on Facebook doesn’t necessarily mean you should share personal photos or social security numbers or whatever with them. Basically, use your common sense.

Finally, we’re really pumped to have you on board, and we can’t wait to hear what you think about our new venture. You’ll no doubt hear more about PackRat in the weeks to come. We’re just getting started. Ready to play?

Play PackRat today at: http://apps.facebook.com/packrat/

— The IconBuffet / PackRat Team PS. You should be getting a special Free Delivery soon!
